How A Man With Just $26 Sold A Company For Half A Billion?

Everyone wants to get rich, as is everyone's right. Some people work long and hard for it, while others get lucky. But if you think it takes resources to become rich, then read the rest of this story, and judge for yourself. It's a story about Christian Gheorghe, a Romanian who came to the U.S with just $26 in his pocket, but a couple decades later, managed to sell a startup company for no less than half a Billion dollars!

This one is all for inspiration.

Gheorghe's journey from Communist Romania to the U.S is nothing short of a wonder. As a teenager in Romania in the '80s, he replaced vacuum tubes to keep his television running, and he made a living out of selling music records. He also taught himself a little bit of English off songs from the likes of Pink Floyd. 

Saving up for years, Gheorghe used the money to buy a knock-off replica of the Commodore 64 PC. From there on, he used to hack into the video games on that machine, and taught himself to code! Most of us look towards college where we're taught coding! Gheorghe, of course, had no such luxury.

Migration to the U.S. in the early 1990s, he only had $26 in his pocket, and could not speak English. He did, however, know how to drive, and so stumbled into a job as a limo driver. That's when he started living in a cheap youth hostel.

While his job as a limo driver, Gheorghe met a man named Andrew Saxe, who would ultimately help him launch his new career. During the ride, Saxe learned about Gheorghe's interest in computers and told him to come by his office. Saxe ran a computer software consulting company. He hired Gheorghe, and the two built a company together. That company was one of the earliest that did "big data," though they didn't call it that back then.

They sold the company to Experian, and Gheorghe ultimately found himself in the position of a CTO for the new company.

After a few years, he launched a second startup, TIAN, and merged it with a company called OutlookSoft. OutlookSoft did a form of big data known as business analytics, where companies slice, dice, report, and predict trends in their business by sifting through their financial transactions.

This is when Christian's luck was about to change. SAP, the enterprise software giant showed an interest in OutlookSoft, and bought it for $500 Million. OutlookSoft was part of a crop of business analytics companies acquired by big enterprise software vendors around that time: Oracle bought Hyperion, IBM bought Cognos, and SAP bought OutlookSoft.

As a result, Gheorghe found himself as a CTO for SAP for a couple of years - a huge position for a self-taught coder.

In 2010, another pang to create a new startup hit Gheorghe, and Tidemark was born. It has all the signs of being another golden venture. Tidemark also does business analytics, but it's designed for the modern age: it is a cloud and mobile app. More importantly, it is designed to be what Gheorghe calls a "revolution at the edge" with a "Siri-like interface." That means that business folks can use it without help from their IT departments creating pre-programmed reports.

All they have to do is ask Tidemark a question, any question, about how their business is performing like ... Why isn't this product selling? What happens if we assign three more people to this project? What will our sales be next quarter? Tidemark answers with charts and graphs. It even names the people in the company who could help with the project.

It's an innovative idea, and is already attracting attention. The company has grown more than 300% year over year, and it is destined to hit the market again, much bigger than half a Billion dollars we presume!

How to get 3G & 4G Mobile internet in Pakistan

Since a decade or even more than this Pakistan had been running 2G technology-based internet for its mobile and Smartphone internet lovers and users. It seemed that our country is behind the race of 3G and 4G technology. Every now and then the mobile users wanted to have 3G and 4G networks available in the country. Now the time has finally come. Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has announced its successful auction of 3G and 4G mobile internet licenses, which means soon the mobile internet lovers will have access to either 3G or 4G networks in Pakistan.

Getting 3G and 4G internet in Pakistan:

Before PTA could unveil its plan of 3G and 4G internet for mobile users, it was quite difficult for us to even think of them. We all were relying upon ordinary and old-fashioned 2G network, but now the dreams have come true. PTA has launched the two G networks for the five mobile networks currently operating successfully in Pakistan—Jazz, Warid, Zong, Telenor and Ufone. According to an update, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has taken the decision of issuing five 3G licenses in the country. Four out of them have been issued to Zong, Telenor, Jazz and Ufone. Zong users can enjoy both 3G and 4G networks while Ufone users can get facilitated with 3G network.

How to get 3G and 4G in Pakistan:

It is interesting to know that now any of the Ufone or Zong user can get facilitated with 3G networking experiences. It means now you can well enhance your internet usage and get facilitated with fast and speedy 3G network.

I must say both 3G and 4G can well compete each other in Pakistan. Which one will be dominating than the other is dependent upon the users’ love and affection towards a network. But before we get into how to get them, let us check out what are 3G and 4G networks.

3G network:

3G is a well versed and highly trusted mobile technology which promises to give the users with enhanced internet usage. It is clearly meant that you can use speedy and fast going internet onto your mobile devices with this 3G network.

4G network:

When it comes to 4G network, then let me tell you that it is considered better than 3G networks in terms of its speed and video downloading experience. Many of the people believe that 4G will be much better than 3G for video content accessing and fast internet usage.

Google Finally Disclosed Why 90% Search Traffic got Effected

OK. So I guess the cat's finally out of the bag, as Google has finally disclosed the reason behind the massive search traffic drop that effected millions of websites last month. In response to the drop, we conducted a few case studies of our own, and looked over the traffic patterns for various websites, large and small. We concluded that there was definitely something wrong, and Google was making changes at the back-end without telling anybody (You can check the study out here). Well now, Google has finally disclosed the reasons behind the traffic drop in an event held Thursday that marked the company's 15th birthday.

Traffic for millions of websites got effected. But even so, Google's and Googlers' blogs and social media profiles were annoyingly deserted, and no one was any the wiser as to what was going on, attributing the massive loss of traffic to another possible algorithmic change. And right they were! Google indeed has made algorithmic changes, and this time around, it's not another beast lurking around in the wilderness...

...it's a major overhaul of the search engine!

OK, the "not another beast" part might not be entirely true, because this new algorithm is called the Hummingbird (like the Panda and Penguin updates). But you gotta hand it to Google for taking something innocent, and turning it something nasty; and apparently, the more innocent, the nastier it is (Google's perverse logic, as it should be called :P). But forgive me for straying off-topic.

As I was saying, it's a major overhaul of the search engine codenamed 'Hummingbird', and it is the biggest change since the 'Caffeine' update in 2010 - possibly bigger, much bigger. "It is really big," admits Amit Singhal, a Google Search executive.

What's new?

Two major changes can be identified from Google's announcement.

1. Complex-queries

As Google has evolved, people have learned to search for phrases and sentences rather than simply words. This is a challenge, because it makes search queries complex. So Google has been working all this time to entertain more and more complex queries. Hence, longer and more complex search queries can be used now for searching content on Google. The purpose is to 'understand' what a searcher wants.

So for example, if I want to compare the nutritional benefits of olive oil and coconut oil (something a Google executive showed off at the event), I won't just be given a list of websites with relevant content. Instead, I will see all the nutritional information in the form of a comparison right there on Google, which means I won't have to actually click through to any website for the desired information. A search algorithm like that is bound to hurt a website that writes about olive oil and its benefits!

2. Voice-based search

Google has now improved upon its voice-based search as well. People speak differently, and write differently. So voice-based queries are different, and more complex than text-based ones. People also use smartphones to search the internet, which also means more voice-based (and ultimately complex) search queries.

Using this as a motivation, Google has designed the new algorithm to better understand voice-based queries, and return relevant results. It now also features support for varying dialects and accents, which is a plus-point for international users (outside the U.S).

So what does it all mean?

As a casual web surfer? It means Google is your go-to place for searching for stuff. Forget Bing or Yahoo. But the more avid user can immediately find a problem; Google is gaining more power. And we all know what happens when there's an imbalance of power, don't we? It makes people dependant. Kind of like putting all your eggs in the same basket. And I don't need to tell you how perilous that can be.

For webmasters, it's cause for concern, because most of their traffic depends on organic search through Google. And if Google suddenly decides that it can provide the content you have on your site by itself, then there's nothing much you can do about it.

But what surprises me is how biased is the attitude towards large, corporate websites. Small websites with great content usually get penalized, whereas the big fish in the corporate world mostly get away with. Not to take a deliberate or personal shot, but when you have free time on your hands, do take a look at the content produced on the site ehow.com, and then tell me if their search ranking is justified or not.

In the end, one can only hope for the best, and pray that the next update would be at least a little less biased, and a little more explained, so that small, yet original content publishers can also profit from their hard work. All the best for the future :)

The value of Facebook in 2014 has reached up to the limits of 104 billion dollars and its market capitalization has mounted to 134 billion dollars.
